An Ultrasound Scanner sometimes called a sonogram is a device used to create images of organs in the body so that they can be examined. The machine sends out high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off body structures. A computer receives the waves and uses them to create a picture. Unlike an x-ray or CT scan, this test does not use ionizing radiation. It is safe because it uses sound waves or echoes to make an image, instead of radiation. Ultrasound scans are used to evaluate fetal development, and they can detect problems in the liver, heart, kidney, or abdomen. They may also assist in performing certain types of biopsy.
